Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
Expert's expertise as an internist combines Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease with Medical Nutrition. As such, she is well equipped to recognize and manage challenging medical conditions, especially in those with different types and degrees of weakened immunity.

A graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine who completed a three-year Internal Medicine Residency at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, in the years before HIV was discovered, Expert became acutely interested in recognizing immune weakness. Thus she sub-specialized in Infectious Disease at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She has treated a wide range of patients with different immune deficiencies, medical conditions and infectious complications, both pediatric and adult.

Expert is particularly experienced with infections in immunodeficient patients such as those with cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, alcoholism, autoimmunity, age, malnutrition or on immunosuppressant medications, such as chemotherapy, steroids, TNF-alpha inhibitors, and anti-metabolites. Her expertise in infectious disease includes viral, bacterial (including, Tuberculosis, other mycobacteria, Nocardia and Actinomyces), parasitic and fungal infections in children and adults with normal immunity and those with immunosuppression. In addition, her premedical work experience and research in bacterial microbiology has equipped her to understand the processing of specimens in the microbiology laboratory.

As the first full-time Infectious Disease Specialist at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center from 1988 through 2000, Expert was pivotal in developing the Department of Infectious Disease, the AIDS Program, the Infection Control Committee as well as policies governing environmental safety in regard to communicable or hazardous exposures to microorganisms. She has encountered countless patients with fungal complications.

Since transferring to private practice, Expert has acquired extensive experience diagnosing and treating fungal infections in patients with documented heavy environmental mold exposure and persistent mold-related illness. A significant portion of her current practice is dedicated to treating mold-exposed patients, including allergic, toxic and invasive infectious complications requiring treatment with anti-fungal medications.

Expert's experience with fungal infections and toxic complications includes, but is not limited to Pneumocystis, Histoplasma, Coccidioides, Mucor, Candida, Cryptococcus, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Alternaria, Chaetomium, Trichophyton, Tinea, and Stachybotrys. Her training and experience in hospital-based Infection Control combined with collaborating with Industrial Hygienists and environmental mold-remediation specialists has given her facility with analyzing environmental mold data, and helping patients identify sources of their illnesses and eliminate continued exposures.

Expert's experience treating persistently ill mold-exposed patients with anti-fungal therapy has been presented at three locales, including a major international conference of clinical and allergy immunology; a major medical mycology congress; and a major internal medicine congress. Expert also gave an oral presentation of her experience treating those with neurological disease after mold exposure at a major conference on antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy, as well as at a major fungal research conference.

Combining years of inner-city experience of Western internal medicine, nutritional medicine, alternative medicine and infectious disease with Asian acupuncture and herbology, Expert has helped many patients with immune deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, heavy metal toxicity, malnutrition, and infections.

Her expertise in medical nutrition is based a strong foundation in basic sciences, and years of working with patients with AIDS. She also attended 1) a 2 week intensive Clinical Nutritional Fellowship at the New York Academy of Medicine with Dr. Darwin Deen. 2) The Columbia-Presbyterian course on Botanical Medicine in Modern Clinical Practice with Andrew Weil in 1997, and 3) matriculated at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine studying both Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture, and 4) a 1 year internship in Japanese Herbology with Nigel Dawes. She is on faculty at Albert Einstein and NY Medical College teaching Nutrition and Alternative Medicine to medical students.

Her expertise includes recognizing and treating both overnutrition, and undernutrition, including vitamins, trace minerals, and other essential nutrients, as well as toxic pollutant exposures (metals, environmental chemicals, and mycotoxins).
