Expert has over 15 years of experience performing interfacial fluid flow research. The bulk of her work in this area has relied on mathematical modeling and numerical techniques. She has developed computational fluid dynamics algorithms to simulate incompressible, interfacial flows with variable surface tension effects due to surfactant. With a surfactant-free implementation of this method she studied the effect of vertical vibration on the dynamics of a sessile drop. She also investigated this system using stability methods. Furthermore, she developed a simple 1D nonlinear vibration model to explain the coupling of the drop dynamics with those of a vibrating membrane that was used to drive the motion in some experiements. Another project aimed to investigate the dynamics of colliding liquid drops. The effect of surfactant on the breakup of a drop in an extensional flow was simulated to assess the impact of the systems parameters on the process. Another approach to understanding surfactant effects, for a liquid layer, relied on thin film modeling. Based on this experience, Expert has a deep understanding of interfacial flow, including variable surface tension effects, that she can apply to a range of other problems. She understands how surfactant and temperature effect surface tension. She knows how to model interfacial boundary conditions.

She has implemented projection methods for incompressible flows. She has implemented volume-of-fluid methods for interfacial flows and is familiar with level set methods. She knows how to solve parabolic, hyperbolic, and elliptic partial differential equations numerically using both iterative and direct methods. She is familiar with the method of characteristics. She developed a method to simulate the dynamics of insoluble surfactant within a volume-of-fluid method.
