Dr. Mitra is board certified in Nephrology by the ABIM with a special interest in hypertension, hemodialysis and renal transplant. He attended medical school at Calcutta Medical College, University of Calcutta in Calcutta, India and received his training in Internal Medicine at Calcutta Medical College Hospitals. He completed a rotating internship at Memorial Hospital in New York in 1965 and his resident training in general medicine the following year in Michigan. He also completed additional fellowship training in nephrology at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1971 and trained in medicine at the various hospitals and institutions in the United Kingdom, including the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh for one year.

He has several honors and awards and is a member of several prestigious associations in the United States and the United Kingdom including Member of Royal College of Physicians, Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

He has served and held several professional appointments in an academic and hospital setting including his current position as Medical Director and Director of the Division of Nephrology at his current institution. His past publications include original papers on hemodialysis in pregnancy, angiotenin cofactor, aldosterone secretion in anephric, renin-angiotensin system, maintenance of hemodialysis, pericardiectomy in uremia, treatment by hemodialysis, methylprednisolone therapy, pulmonary hemorrhage in immune complex glomerulonephritis, and pancreatitis in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients. He is currently working on a research involving parallel design study of renal phosphate binders versus calcium based phosphate binders.

DIALYSIS: He serves as medical director of a dialysis service center and has provided consulting services on various issues regarding dialysis. He is also familiar with various aspects of dialysis including hemodialysis in pregnant women, management of hemodialysis, treatment of hemodialysis, and assessing and providing therapy for patients with chronic hemodialysis issues. He is also one of the pioneers of the computer-assisted management of the satellite dialysis program. He has experience evaluating sleep apnea in dialysis patients with diabetes. He has worked with patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and has conducted a comparative study of home hemodialysis in ESRD patients.

RENAL DISEASE: Dr. Mitra has experience working with renal allograft patients and treating and managing chronic renal failure. He has also assessed and evaluated the efficiencies as well as the effects of various pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of various types of renal diseases and conditions.

Dr. Mitra has been appointed a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Senior Resident in Medicine during his post-graduate studies and practice, Chairman of the Home dialysis Task Force, Chairman of the Medical Review Board, Vice Chairman of the Renal Physician Association, Chairman of the Forum of Clinical Chiefs, Medical Director and a member of the the Board of Directors for a local medical society. He has held several hospital and academic appointments including Assistant physician in Medicine and Nephrology, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, Senior Physician, Chief of the Division of Nephrology, Director of the Division of Nephrology and Medical Director.


Dr. Mitra has been honored with the Best Clinical Faculty of the Year Award, Best poster presentation award by the American College of Physicians, Advanced Achievement in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Best full time Faculty Teacher of the Year, and the Best Doctors in Springfield. He has also been recognized and invited to as honorary guest, speaker and member of several prestigious associations including American Society of Hypertension and Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society.

Medical/Professional Internships

Dr. Mitra completed his Internship and Resident Training in Internal Medicine at Calcutta Medical College Hospitals. He also did a rotating Internship at Memorial Hospital and his residency in medicine at Wayne State University Hospitals. He was a trained fellow in Nephrology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in 1971.
