Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
Expert has been closely involved in the application, prosecution and litigation of plasma TV technologies. Expert has applied for and received numerous US and foreign patents in the field of plasma TV's.

As a consultant, Expert's plasma and patent experience made him a valuable asset in a recent litigation case between plasma TV rivals. Expert assisted defending litigation counsel with claim constructions and prior art research to contest the validity of the infringement claims.

In less dramatic consultation services, Expert reviews patents from a wide variety of technologies to determine a patent's point of novelty, uniqueness and potential for usage. Expert has gathered evidence of use and prepared claim charts to document potential value and/or infringement potential of a patent. Expert has an electronics laboratory and is capable of reverse engineering a product to seek potential evidence of use.

As a technologist, Expert assists clients with the review of their technology for patenting. Being an engineer, and an inventor himself, he provides his clients with his inventive skills as he teaches the patenting process, identifies points of novelty, researches prior art, and prepares disclosures, figures and preliminary claims. Given the time consumed by development staff for these activities, Expert can act as an outside liaison between developers and legal staff to streamline intellectual property development.

Expert's career has been focused in the design of the driving electronics for Plasma TVs. Expert has several US patents for inventions related to the design of Plasma TV electronics and their operating waveforms.

Expert's electronics design skills include high voltage and frequency AC pulse generator circuits using discrete electronic elements such as MOSFETs, IGBT, bipolar transistors, inductors, capacitors and, of course, resistors. Optical isolation of high voltage signals, electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction and safety qualifications are also in Expert's area of expertise. Expert designs DC-DC converters for this application as well. Expert has been a circuit board designer for much of his career and is proficient with AutoCad, Pads and Eagle PCB layout tools and Spice simulation.

Currently, Expert continues to work on electronic projects as part of his business's services. His electronics laboratory is equipped to perform product evaluations, develop prototype electronics, debug reliability problems and more.

Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • Patent Litigation Example: In a major plasma TV litigation case, Expert researched the fields' old patents and provided background art to the defense council related to aspects of the infringement claims that became key documents for testing the relevance, novelty and validity of the patents in question.
  • Electronics Development Example:Expert developed a set of electronics for a start-up company. The company has patented a tubular plasma display technology and has applied this technology to a reflective LCD signage application. Although the driving electronics for these applications are quite dis-similar, Expert developed a circuit board using Eagle PCB that would accommodate both applications. The client provided logic control signals via a computer interface. Expert designed a circuit board that received the logic and an input DC power source. The DC power source was used by a series of DC-DC power supply circuits to generate the logic voltages and high voltage necessary for the plasma technology. Each power supply was controllable via computer to facilitate testing the display technologies. The power output circuits were totem-pole power MOSFETs controlled by optically isolated drivers. Once the circuit board was fabricated, Expert provided assembly and test services to his client. Following delivery, Expert assisted the client with the initial operation of the circuits and provided numerous tweaks to the design to accommodate the changing needs of the client. Since the original design, a second generation circuit was also developed. The client now has several sets that they have dedicated to specific testing stations.
  • Expert has traveled to India to assist a CRT manufacturer transition into plasma display technology. During this year long assignment, Expert taught their engineers how to develop reliable circuits for their panels. Once they applied Expert's teachings, their circuits performed without the continual failures that were seen on the initial design. Expert also assisted them with panel fabrication issues and the plasma physics behind the technology.
  • Expert provides technical assistance to firms that purchase and sell intellectual property assets. Expert receives a list of patents to review and assess. The bottom line interest in these patents is the question: "Is anyone using this patent now? and "Will it be used in the future" Of course folk like to sell off their "junk", but occasionally, there is a missed golden nugget in a patent claim that may be either broadly applicable or is in current use. Upon finding a potentially valuable patent claim, Expert scans the prior art as a quick validity check and then looks for examples of potential usage. Often exact matches are not readily available to document, but whenever possible Expert prepares a claim chart siting any evidence of use against the claims. For a seller or a buyer, this is an indicator of potential value.
  • Of course not all projects are big projects. Expert loves to tinker with things to gain new knowledge. It can be anything, really. Expert is developing efficient heating and cooling methods, adding to his knowledge of heat transfer. Expert enjoys the "hobby" of salt water aquariums. It's really more like a series of ongoing experiments involving sea creatures. This "hobby" provides a wealth of knowledge in the fields of water filtration, biology and chemistry. As a technologist, Expert believes that "everything relates to everything". What is learned one day doing task A mysteriously becomes broadly applicable to another day's task B. I guess that is how the inventive mind works...

International Experience:
Years   Country / Region   Summary
1996 to 2006   Japan   After Panasonic bought the company that Expert worked for, he was responsible for continued product development under Japanese management. Expert has traveled to Japan numerous times to share his project's plans, status and technical attributes of Expert's new technologies.
2006 to 2007   India   Samtel Color LTD in India was a prominent CRT manufacturer in India. As CRT demand declined, they sought to develop plasma displays. Expert evaluated their driving electronics and provided design enhancements to improve there operation. Reliability was increased, energy efficiency improved, and EMI "noise" was reduced. Expert also provided technical assistance with plasma physics and panel fabrication.

Language Skills:
Foreign Language   Description
Japanese   Many meetings with Japanese co-workers diverted into periods where Expert's Japanese colleagues would discuss the topic in Japanese. Quite often, discussing a point in Japanese, Expert would enter the conversation, in English, as if he understood the Japanese being spoken. One Japanese friend used to comment that Expert "speaks" Japanese. It was really more a matter of understanding their thoughts and concerns and following body language pointing to this or that, that provided the understanding.
