Expert is a fully qualified clinical psychologist and organisational psychologist. She has studied psychology and medicine, specialising in the overlap between physical and psychological health. She has applied this expertise in formal health care settings, voluntary organisations (e.g. Red Cross) and in organisational context (e.g. occupational health or personnel management projects). She has absolved postdoctoral education in methodology, psychotherapy and neuropsychology, again applying this in a wide variety of settings. Expert has worked in the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland); she has pursued further education and attended/presented at conferences in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Greece. Expert was one of three clinical psychologists, providing a full range of psychological services (inc. neuropsychological assessment and psychotherapy); she also provided staff consultancy and training and developed a super-specialist approach to the care of people with advanced dementia. She developed and delivered the relevant staff training, and published her research on this project. During this employment Expert replaced her manager (head of speciality) for nearly 15 months. During this period she was responsible for all organisation, managing and delivery of the service. Specifically she provided psychotherapeutic interventions to casualties of international conflicts (World War I and II, Indian Independence War, Korean War, Falkland War, Gulf War etc.) She was responsible for initiating and developing psychological services to older people with mental health problems and/or cognitive impairment, and she was a founder member of the Cumbrian branch of the Alzheimer's Disease Society. She taught on psychological subjects to a variety of health professionals and supervised other professionals on their psychology-based interventions. Expert developed a multidisciplinary model of clinical approach to clients with a complex presentation and she was chair of the first multidiciplinary mental health team in Cumbria. Expert lectured on 'social medical' models (e.g. occupational applications, medical aspects of heavy industry, epidemiology etc.) and tutored one cohort of medical students in their social-medical thesis (examples of subjects: urban v. rural residence and their impact on non-specific lung diseases; impact of noise and fumes on psychological health in workers in the plastics industry). During this time Expert also carried out her research on the viability of the application of a British-style system of student tutoring in the Medical faculty of Groningen University.

Expert is registered by the Health Professions Council in Great Britain. She is an active member of the British Psychological Society (Division of Clinical Psychology and Division of Neuropsychology, Faculty of Psychologists Specialising in Work with Older People). She is accredited by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy as a psychotherapist (and through this accreditation a member of the European Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy.

Professional Appointments

Expert has served as the chair of the Community Mental Health Team in Cumbria (1990-1991); she has served on various committees of the Faculty of Psychologists Specialising in Work with Older People (PSIGE), as branch secretary (1994), conference organiser (1993 and 2006), and Newsletter Editor (1998-2001). At present she plays a leading role in the proposal of a special group/subdivision of independent practitioners within the British Psychological Society.

English   Expert speaks English as a foreign language. She has lived and worked in the UK for 20 years and her English is now fluent
Dutch   This is Expert' native language. She speaks standard Dutch (NL), can fluently follow Flemish (some of her relatives are Flemish speaking Belgians), and can follow spoken Afrikaans.
French and German   Expert has sufficient French to carry out psychotherapy and consultancy work in this language. She has translated one book from French into English and Dutch Expert is fluent in standard German. She can also follow the Austrian and Swiss variety of German fluently and has some ability to follow Yiddish through combination of German and (elementary) knowledge of Hebrew. She has in the past professionally translated German computer manuals into Dutch and English. She has worked in total about six months in Germany, and she grew up less than 10 kms from the German border, giving her a life-long exposure to the German language. During her work in Britain she has translated written materials from German to English for the benefit of her (monolingual) British colleagues and employers.
Spanish and Italian   Expert has active and passive knowledge of Spanish and Italian to a degree of maintaining a conversation and reading books and articles in the original. Although her mastery of these languages is not fluent, during a recent conference in Spain, she was able to participate in the Spanish-language programme. Her Italian is standard Italian, and her Spanish is the Castellano variety.

Expert has developed and delivered seminars on the use (and not) of personal computers in private practice for psychologists. She has also lectured and tutored advanced university students in social-medical subjects. Expert has introduced a complex system of sensory stimulation for people with very severe cognitive impairment (Snoezelen); she has developed a (direct hands-on) care staff training programme and delivered this in various institutions; she has also passed this technique on to other psychologists and relevant health professionals. Dra Expert has taught formal courses on the nature and psychological approaches to dementia to postgraduate as well as graduate psychology students; she has also taught professional ethics in connection with complex clinical work Expert regularly develops and delivers 'tailor-made' approaches to complex behavioural problems in residential/nursing environments; her speciality is approaches to difficult behaviour in people with cognitive impairment and/or personality disorders with emphasis on equipping direct caring/nursing staff with practical skills to handle these challenges ethically and without negative impact on their own psychological health.
