Expert is a marine scientist with over 30 years experience of research in coral reef biology and conservation, working mainly on environmental stress, climate change impacts and diseases. He has worked on large intergovernmental programmes and recently acted for three years as the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific. He worked for 10 years on the GEF/World Bank Coral Reef Targeted Research Programme and has acted on the UNESCO -Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission ad hoc committee on coral bleaching and on the Programme Committee of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Sciences Association, Marine Science and Management programme.

His work is applied mainly to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), including Environmental Statement review and all aspects of EIA and scoping studies in a range of environments, mainly tropical coastal areas.

Prof Expert has a wealth of training experience at all levels and has organised, designed and delivered short courses on EIA, coastal resources management and coral reef ecology and marine microbial ecology. Some examples include a training workshop: Microbial Ecology Methods in Marine Ecosystems, Institute for Marine Sciences, Zanzibar, Tanzania (2008) and the Pauley Programme Summer School, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, Oahu, Hawaii (2007). He has been Director of two MSc programmes at Expert's University and had senior responsibility for all research programmes at the University of the South Pacific (2012-2015).
