Expert's principal expertise lies in the cross-over between computing and science/engineering. He did his undergraduate studies in Aerospace Engineering, and has significant work experience in the defence & aerospace sectors - in particular with regard to helicopters. He is about to complete his PhD on linking real-time computational fluid dynamics with helicopter flight simulation, through this research he has gained significant experience with high performance computing.

He co-founded a small technology business in March 2008. This has given him experience in the commercial side of technology, through which he engages with companies such as Microsoft, Intel, AgustaWestland, QinetiQ, and Lockheed Martin.

2008 to

Cursive Simulation

Expert co-founded this small technology consultancy. It focuses on simulation and high performance computing, customers and partners include: Microsoft, AgustaWestland, QinetiQ, Intel, UK MoD, Vexcel, Emergent Game Technologies, Horizon Simulation, and others. Cursive has just entered its third financial year and is expanding.

2005 to 2008

(undisclosed government agency)

Rotorcraft Survivability

Analyst & Technical Coordinator

Group was responsible for continuous analysis and improvement of military helicopter survivability. This ranged from computer modelling of threats to flight testing of new hardware. Expert was responsible for technical coordination of a large technology development programme, involving four large defence companies and several NATO countries. This role entailed designing and planning live fire ground & flight trials, and simulator testing, arranging meetings with partner companies and military user community, and ensuring coordination of development efforts in line with technology architecture.

2003 to 2005

(undisclosed government agency)

Rotorcraft Acquisition

Department was responsible for analysing the current, and potential future, UK military rotorcraft fleet. Expert' job involved working with, and extending, a large suite of helicopter performance and operational analysis computer models. In particular he developed a new software module which automatically planned helicopter routes, taking into account terrain, performance, and tactics; this improved the accuracy of the modelling suite. The suite was used directly to advise choice of future rotorcraft fleet: number of aircraft and number of types.

2000 to 2001

(undisclosed government agency)

Naval EW

Worked in group responsible for developing computer simulations for naval radar systems, simulations were successfully used to inform the design and deployment of world-leading new radar system. (Job entailed use of C/C++/Fortran on a parallel processing system.)

1998 to 2000

Logique Ltd.

Web Consultant

Expert worked with a large leisure and tourism company to develop their internet presence, from analysing their business needs to deploying websites. The project was successful, measurably increasing the company's already significant revenues.

Career Accomplishments:

Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • [Dec 08-Aug 09] Worked with AgustaWestland (helicopter manufacturer), ATIL, and former senior military pilots to design a helicopter tactics training course for NATO pilots. Expert' role specifically drew on his unique combination of experience in helicopter survivability and simulation technology. Through being involved in the course design process he was able to develop a thorough understanding of the technology requirements, and was also able to make it clear from the outset how technology might limit or extend the possibilities for training delivery. Ultimately this proof-of-concept project was well received, helicopter crews from three nations were given training, a more significant programme is now underway to develop a mature system for wider use - AgustaWestland have selected Expert as technical architect.
  • [Apr-Dec 08] Through Expert's PhD research and his business activities Microsoft asked Expert to develop a technology demonstrator for their high-profile stand at I/ITSEC 2008. Expert worked with directors from two Microsoft product teams to tailor the exhibit and to provide on-site support to Microsoft during the show.
  • [Jan-Mar 08] When Microsoft released ESP the UK MoD was interested in understanding what it could do, and how it might develop over time. Expert worked with the COTS Evaluation Unit at QinetiQ, providing them with a thorough and detailed evaluation of the new software platform, how it might be applied, assessing the complexity of developing various capabilities, and comparing it to strategic requirements for training and research simulation.
  • [Jun-Dec 08] Expert worked with a company who had developed a novel quad-rotor UAV, he helped them develop the business case for their aircraft, essentially focusing on how it might be used. He then developed a series of example scenarios and created complex simulator missions to demonstrate the tactical value of the aircraft; this included a simulated remote piloting station. It gave potential customers the ability to experience the flight handling and mission capabilities of the UAV, providing the UAV's designers with a valuable tool.
