Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert qualified in 1984 with a Ph.D in the field of hearing research from Cambridge University, U.K. Since then he has published more than 100 research articles on a wide range of topics concerning auditory perception. Much of that work focussed on how listeners pick out one sound, such as a voice, from noisy surroundings. As a result he has an in-depth knowledge of how sound is processed from peripheral stages of the auditory system through to higher-level parts of the brain. For the last 15 years he has applied this basic knowledge to the study of deaf patients fitted with a cochlear implant. His research involves behavioural, physiological, and neuro-imaging techniques, and has involved collaborations with all three major cochlear implant companies. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of Clare Hall Cambridge, sits on the scientific advisory board of the charity Deafness Research UK, and is associate editor of two major journals in the field.

This method was implemented in a series of experiments by a cochlear implant company, who continue to assess its feasibility for implementation into a device. He continues to advise them on this matter.
