Expert has 30 years experience as a Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychologist. She has worked for the past 14 years (to February 2010) as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Head of Discipline within a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) setting. Her main areas of clinical work with clients have been the assessment and treatment of trauma, working with bereavement, loss and abuse, as well as the psychometric assessment of children adolescents and adults. Expert's Doctoral Dissertation (2008) was an investigation of traumatised children's experiences of EMDR therapy and she is trained and experienced in using this approach with children, young people and adults. Her expertise in psychometrics covers cognitive assessment and neuropsychological assessment as well as the assessment of personality using, not only questionnaires but also the Rorschach Test.

Expert was responsible for developing the Clinical Psychology service from virtually nothing to a viable and thriving team of psychologists through recruitment and retention of staff. She also set up and headed a multidisciplinary Learning Disabilities and ASD team. She provided psychological assessment and therapy to children, young people and families from a broad spectrum of cultural backgrounds reflecting the diversity of the population of Newham. She supervised qualified clinical psychologists, trainee clinical psychologists from the UCL, UEL and Royal Holloway courses and professionals from other disciplines. Expert provided in-house training in the psychometric assessment of children and also gave presentations on her areas of expertise such as EMDR and complex cases.

Expert was the first Consultant Psychologist appointed to this multidisciplinary CAMHS. She extended the range of services provided by establishing regular clinics to the Islands and Highlands (Bute and Dunoon specifically) after consultation with local stakeholders such as GPs. She was responsible for providing Clinical Psychology assessments and interventions to most of children, young people and families referred to the Clinical Psychology service. She was ably assisted by a succession of trainees (whom she supervised) from Glasgow University as well as by the appointment of a part-time clinical psychologist and an administrator. She worked closely with other clinicians, in particular the nurses who provided day-patient services including groups and the teacher who worked in the clinic's school.

In her practice in Spring Hill, Queensland, Australia, Expert saw a range of clients for individual therapy. Most clients were adults with presenting difficulties such as depression, anxiety conditions, etc A dietician referred many of her overweight women clients who struggled to shed weight and it was through this work that Expert developed an understanding and interest in childhood sexual abuse as many of these clients were suffering the aftermath of such early trauma. She also undertook medico-legal cases in the Family Court

Because of her background in group work (psychodrama) and education as well as a research interest in assertive communication, Expert was invited to join the AIM to provide a range of trainings. Her courses ranged from one to five days and were for clients from a broad range of businesses and industries. Her courses included Communication Skills, Conflict Resolution, Interview Skills and Train the Trainer. At times she would travel to conduct in-house workshops on site for example to the BHP open cut mine at Dysart and to the aluminium smelter near Gladstone. She provided team building for the ABC television team of producers and for ABC radio presenters.

Expert provided all the clinical psychology input in this small multidisciplinary clinic. She saw children and young people for psychometric assessments and therapy. She also provided supervision for trainee psychologists from the University of Queensland.

Expert Witness Experience Summary:
Expert has many years experience providing medico legal reports for adults, children and young people. Initially these were mostly for family matters such as access and custody disagreements and she has been cross examined in court in Australia in one or two such cases in the Family Court. More recently the majority of legal work has involved assessment of psychological injuries arising from accidents and injuries such as road traffic accidents. She has been cross examined in court on two occasions in the UK, one a care proceeding and the other a criminal case. She has more often been asked to come to court where discussions are held without the need for cross examination ensuing. She has been to the High Court for one such case.

French   Expert studied French at university for three years with grades consistently at Distinction level, and was a high school French teacher for a time. She visits France quite often and her French is currently at an adequate level for straightforward conversations and getting around. She has occasionally utilised her French language skills in a counseling situation. Her accent is good.

Additional Skills and Services:

Expert has developed and delivered a number of seminars and courses on the psychometric evaluation of children to provide advanced training for qualified clinical psychologists either in-house or under the auspices of a University. She most recently gave a brief presentation on the WISC IV for other mental health professionals at Ticehurst Hospital. Ruth, together with colleagues put together a conference on Child Trauma at City University, London in February 2007. She has also presented a number of seminars on child trauma in other forums. Some years ago Expert developed a number of courses which she taught for the Australian Institute of Management, most notably Communication Skills, Conflict resolution, Stress Management, Interview Skills and Train the Trainer. She collaborated with colleagues in Education to develop a one day seminar for teachers on Selective Mutism. She has provided a one day training on three occasions to Social Services staff on the use of the Assessment Framework pack of measures.

Whilst managing teams of psychologists Expert promoted the development of a number of groups run by psychologists in her staff group for example for Parents of children with ADHD, for the parents of children with ASD and a Social Skills groups for boys with Asperger's syndrome.
