Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert has worked with vendors in basically all subject areas involved in the purchasing of supplies, equipment and services in healthcare. Expert developed individual contracts as well as working with vendors via Group Purchasing Organizations or as part of an IDN system.

It is extremely important to constantly review your costs to try and reduce your expenses by reviewing alternative products and methods with your colleagues. Utilization should also be studied in terms how products are used and how much inventory is allowed to sit in a designated area.

Expert has worked with many departments in a hospital setting reviewing sources of supply when RFP's are going to be developed to stimulate competition. In cases of equipment purchases this may involved researching areas that the hospital has not been involved for years and new market data must be obtained and analyzed.

In Expert's 40 plus years of working in the health care purchasing field he has studied the potential impact of introducing new products, services and equipment in departments in a hospital especially relating to capital equipment. In a number of the cases the purchase of capital equipment is one small aspect of the overall picture. Other factors to be considered are staff requirements, space needs, renovations needed, and the impact on other departments to come up with a true total cost.

On the other side of the equation is what revenue will be generated if any, by introducing a new service or an expansion of services and how realistic are the projections.

Expert started his own Purchasing Consulting Business 14 years ago after a 27 year career as Director of Materials Management at a few different hospitals in Connecticut.

This experience has called upon all of the skills that Expert has developed over the years in many different ways when a weekly paycheck can never be taken for granted and there is a lot of competition.

Expert client's have included hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, surgery centers, small businesses and Group Purchasing Organizations. The major focus is on expense reduction. This does not mean buying inferior products or making wholesale vendor changes. Instead, it requires paying attention to detail, developing competition, auditing contracts and reporting results to management.

Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • Expert rolls up his sleeves and reviews contracts for all his clients to place them in the best position to purchase quality products at the lowest price. Expert will utilize a combination of individual contracts and Group Purchasing Orgnaiztions agreements.
  • Expert reviews invoices to gather information discovering data that is not readily apparent on usage reports provided by vendors. Examples of data discovered were freight charges, "temporary fuel surcharges" minimum order charges, and identifying various manufacturers selling direct whose products could be purchase through distributors reducing supply chain costs. In addition clients sometimes are paying for equipment they longer have in operation and for time frames when they are not operational (i.e paying for 7 day a week/24 hour coverage, yet the department in question is only open 5 days a week 12 hour a day)
  • Expert participates with team members at a clients facility to evaluate products that are being used and for what purpose commonly called "Value Analysis" in a hospital setting. Examples include type of plastic bags and liners utilized, and the contents of custom kits and packs used in departments especially in the OR discovering waste.

Additional Skills and Services:
Training/Seminars

Expert developed and presented a webcast in July 2010 titled Hospital Purchasing Trends focusing on Group Purchasing trends in the health care area to approximately 80 organizations who signed up for this presentation.

Supplier and Vendor Location and Selection

Expert throughout his career has researched and discovered vendors in any number of subject areas including but not limited to radiology, laboratory, medical/surgical, office equipment, waste hauling, shredding companies etc.

Other Skills and Services

Expert has insight and vision into areas that have been overlooked for years by purchasing staff including Food Service, Engineering and Pharmacy. In addition Expert pays attention to detail when reviewing contracts looking for basic terms and conditions which put a client at a disadvantage. Examples include clients signing contracts with "evergreen clauses" (automatic renewals of contracts for like time periods as the original contract based on the vendor terms unless prior notice is given by the client to a vendor). This is absolutely not acceptable. Also in case of litigation the client should have the case heard in the state courts where they are incorporated not in the vendors home state, for obvious reasons a point that is also very much overlooked by the client.
