The service involves both acute and chronic pain management. The service accepts referrals from General Practitioners and other specialists of patients with chronic pain problems. As she works at a tertiary referral centre her patients often have complex and long-standing chronic pain problems e.g. chronic back pain, post-whiplash injury pain, headaches, peripheral nerve problems, post-amputation pain, cancer pain, joint pains, complex regional pain syndrome, post-surgical pain, post-traumatic pain, brachial plexus pain and various musculoskeletal pains. Within her service, drugs, nerve blocks, physical techniques and psychological interventions are used to manage pain. She is experienced in most interventional pain management e.g. spinal drug delivery and spinal cord stimulation; She is also interested in pain of trauma, surgery and pain of nervous system origin e.g. complex regional pain syndrome and its management. She has a Pain Management Programme. She has developed special expertise in cancer pain management, particularly with regard to intrathecal drug delivery. She is experienced in acupuncture and holds the Diploma of the British Medical Acupuncture Society. She regularly lectures at national and international meetings on this topic.

Expert Witness Experience Summary:
She has been involved in medicolegal work for about 15 years; She has attended courses on report writing and cross-examination at the Royal Society of Medicine. She also attends medico-legal lectures, seminars and workshops. She maintains her knowledge and skills by regular reading and e-learning.

She has been trained by the Leeds Trust as an assessor of critical incidents using Root Cause Analysis techniques. She has been involved in internal investigations of complaints within the Leeds Trust.

She now mainly accepts instructions about pain related cases. Her current ratio of Claimant to Defendant instructions is about 4:1; she is often instructed as a single joint expert.

She is experienced in report writing, answering Part 35 questions, producing joint statements, conferences and court attendance. She has given expert evidence in the Royal Courts of Justice.

The majority of her medico-legal work concerns personal injury. However she has provided expert evidence for many complex clinical negligence cases involving anaesthesia, pain management and palliative care. She has provided expert evidence in some criminal cases and appeared in court as an expert in cases of homicide in adults and children. She has provided expert opinion and attended court for the GMC in a cases concerning fitness to practice.
