Summary of Expertise:

Expert joined the UKAEA in 1967 doing post irradiation examination (PIE) on reactor fuel assemblies until 1982. During this period he utilised and developed a wide variety of PIE techniques and developed techniques for bulk reduction of HTR fuel assemblies. He was also responsible for criticality assessments of fuel storage areas and the hot cells in the active handling building at Winfrith. From 1982 to 1985 he was responsible for the development of high temperature techniques to study the chemical and physical characteristics of aerosols that are generated in severe reactor accidents and helped identify the reasons behind the core collapse at Three Mile Island. In 1985 he joined the UKAEA Health Physics division on the Winfrith site where he ran the site external HSE approved dosimetry service till 1988. Subsequently he ran the Radiation Protection Instrument Service (RPIS) with facilities at the Harwell and Winfrith sites. Since 1988 he has achieved UKAS accreditation for a wide variety of radiological measurements and gave the Service a high national profile. He became UKAS Group Head of NUKEM RPI Services and acted as Principal RPI Consultant for the company in radiation measurement, and represented the company on the BSI Nuclear Counting Equipment Committee (NCE/2), and the Ionising Radiation Metrology Forum at the NPL. He is currently self employed and offers a consultancy service in radiation metrology.

Since becoming self employed he has maintained an active involvement in the relevant British Standards Institute committee NCE/2, and is a member of the ISO working groups concerned with reference radiations, practical monitoring and dosimetry. He still works on good practice guides under the auspices of the Ionising Radiation Metrology Forum.
