Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert is a weather hazards specialist and consulting climatologist with professional and research interests in high-impact weather events. He has published peer reviewed articles, book chapters, and scholarly comments, and given formal scientific presentations on extreme rainfall return periods (for example, 100-year storms), high-impact convective weather events in urban areas, the frequency of tornadoes in major central business districts, return periods for heavy snowstorms, and transition-season "super cyclones" that produce blizzards in the northern US and tornadoes in the South. He was a participating scientist on a multi-year, multi-agency research project assessing the impacts of climate change on Minnesota's aquatic resources.

Much of Expert's work has been oriented toward risk reduction and long-term planning capacities of municipal, metropolitan and regional entities, and he has worked with officials at all levels-- private, public, and local through federal. His work has also been utilized by civil engineers, large corporations, and community organizations. He regularly teaches university-level courses in meteorology, natural hazards, numerical spatial analysis, and other introductory and advanced geographical topics.

Expert's research combines publicly-available data and historical resources with statistical and mapping techniques to create cutting edge, entity-specific weather hazard projections and scenarios. His unique approach to risk analysis has helped many entities plan for "probable worst-case scenarios," which he defines as events that may be expected once or twice in a 40-year career. These sorts of events can be incapacitating, but by orienting corporations and agencies toward their likelihood, detailed action plans that drastically reduce total losses can be developed.

Expert is a sought-after, engaging, and often humorous public speaker who has given numerous invited presentations and keynote addresses in a variety of venues, on topics spanning the spectrum of his expertise. He developed and facilitated a comprehensive, federally-sponsored emergency planning exercise involving 75 interested parties and has served as advisor to the Weather and Society program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. He is regularly involved in numerous educational and outreach activities aimed at improving resiliency to weather-related hazards. Given the serious nature of his research expertise, Expert has developed techniques to keep clients positive, and focused on best-possible outcomes, which is the ultimate goal of his applied work.

Expert is a member of the American Meteorological Society, the Association of American Geographers, and is a Skywarn severe weather spotter.
