His key competencies are technical and financial analyses of mining projects and the impact of mining on national economies.

His Ph.D. Thesis investigated the economic impact of the mining industry on the South African economy, using Wassily Leontief's Input-Output model. He is able to apply this theory to operating mines on the premise that these mines are analogous to macro-economic systems.
