Definition:  Calciferol - A fat-soluble sterol-like vitamin with antirachitic properties. It is important in calcium and phosphate metabolism; it is required for calcium absorption and the mineralization of bone. Vitamin D is produced in the body upon exposure to sunlight, and is found in egg yolk, liver oils of various fish, and enriched milk. Deficiency of vitamin D tends to cause rickets in children, and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults.

Synonyms:  antirachitic vitamin, vitamin D
