Definition:  Calcium Fluoride - A compound of calcium and fluorine of the formula CaF2 that occurs naturally as fluorite or fluorspar. Properties: forms a clear or white powder, high coefficient of thermal expansion, tends to absorb moisture, melts at 1423 degrees C, boils around 2500 degrees C. Uses include: electron spectroscopy, glass etching, lasers. Calcium fluoride is often used in place of crown glass to produce lenses with a good correction for chromatic aberrations.

Synonyms:  CaF2
