    Definition:  Meningitis - An infectious nervous system disease characterized by an inflammation of the three membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (the dura mater, pia mater and arachnoid). It can be caused by a variety of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoan. Symptoms include headache, nausea and vomiting. In many cases convulsions and coma can occur and brain damage can result.
