    Definition:  Thiamine - A water-soluble B vitamin which contains a pyrimidine and a thiazole ring, and is a precursor of the coenzyme thiamine pyrophosphate. It is found in beans, green vegetables, sweet corn, egg yolk, liver, corn meal, brown rice, yeast and germinating cereal grains, and in blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid in the free state. Thiamine is necessary for the breakdown of carbohydrates; deficiency results in beriberi or polyneuritis.
